The Libertine

Well, apparently my blog yesterday wasn't controversial enough for Mike to make a comment. You can imagine his disappointment when my blog didn't attack him. I'll try not to disappoint him in the future.

Anyway, yesterday I cut my hair the shortest I've had it since I was 5. In fact I think this is the haircut I had when I was five. It is now the same length as Brian's, but I flip mine out and the back is a little longer I think. Anyway, I went to Mike and Brian's house sporting my new do. Brian said he thought it was cute, which was an upgrade from last time's no comment. Mike, of course, said I looked like a (and used a derogatory term for a lesbian). Mom, be sure to add this to your list of reasons to lay the smack down on Mike.

Anyway, I feel like cutting my hair this short makes me feel more independent, more liberated. I told my supervisor that I was defying societal hair restraints. I made the mistake of telling Brian that my hair made me feel independent and now everytime he looks at me he tells me how independent I look.

As we discussed hair, I told my supervisor, Peggy, that I would shave my head if it was for a good cause, so now she is on a quest to find a cause for me to shave my head. Hopefully, she doesn't find any...

When you were 5 you had a Cleopatra haircut, it wasn't real short. Oh and Mike's rap sheet is now longer than some of the men in my court ordered parenting classes.

Ummm, Naomi,

on the choice of title of "The Libertine" which I interpreted as applying to you and your new 'do', I wonder if you researched the connotations of that phrase beyond the straight forward definition of "a freethinker, especially in religious matters"

What jogged in my memory was that "The Libertine" is the title of an Adam Ant song, and the subject matter of most Adam Ant songs is not something I ususally associate with "Naomi - Freethinker".

So I went to my present favorite internet info resource, "Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia!", a small excerpt from the Libertine entry there is;
" 'Libertine' has come to mean one free from restraint, particularly from social and religious norms and morals. In modern times, libertinism has been associated with Libertarianism (inaccurately), sado-masochism, nihilism, and free love"

and the modern definition is why it was the inspiration of an Adam Ant song,

And here's the lyrics of that song, enjoy!

Artist: Adam Ant
Song: Libertine
Album: Strip

A word from her is worth ten from me
Her main concern is honesty
She beat the selfishness right out of me
The wild eyed child
She's my libertine

My only books were women's looks
And the more I read, the less I said

She wanted to search inside me
To find this so-called purity
She acts the films that I can't see
The wild eyed child
She's my libertine

She showed me the slim chance I'd got
And all the friendships baby, that I had not
Be sure she has the guts of three
The wild eyed child
She's my libertine

I know a girl she's got a lust for danger
Thinks being tough makes her the Lone Ranger
But when the chips are down it's loving she craves
She's just another Aphrodite slave
